E-Learning Design Recommendations for Design

Our task for this assignment was to choose one of the three courses presented to us, review it and make recommendations of how it could be improved by implementing a variety of the new technologies that have been exposed to us through the semester.

During my recommendations I have used a combination of learning theories, these being cognitive, humanist, social learning. A combination of theories is important to use as all learners are different vary in their preferred learning styles. For this reason, a range of styles is best to use so that all learners can be accommodated for.

The course is developed in a cognitive style, that is, the sessions must be followed in order as they build on from one another. For example, the course starts with the introduction with an ice breaker and ends with the conclusion and the goal making.

The goal setting in the last session actually also suggests a humanist approach to the course, as well as a combination of the introduction gradually easing the participants into the course and providing a supportive and private environment: ‘confidentiality and respect’ (DoCS, 2005, p.6).

A variety of technologies have been included into the recommendations. The original style of the course was very basic with the only use of technology being a powerpoint display. Other items were used such as butchers paper and post it notes, which, while still being acceptable, are a little outdated and fairly common. There were a large number of group discussions and group activities, which I would suggest to remain in use, as this encourages a group atmosphere as well as social sharing and collaboration.

I have also suggested keeping the powerpoint as a basis for the presentation. The course does not have to be focused around the powerpoint, however having it there does allow participants to visually know what they are up to and can help to imprint points into their mind.

Vodcasts, if chosen correctly can enhance a presentation immensely and I have therefore added a couple into the course. These need to be well selected, not too long in length and directly relate to the point being illustrated. These vodcasts can then be followed by a discussion raising individual items of concern and general points.

The activity of goal setting in the final session can be done on paper as it set out to be, or they could use a PC and email their goals to themselves, therefore they have a) thought about the goals and set them, b) typed them out in order to imprint them in their mind and, c) when they open their emails at work next, they are reminded of their goals. This repetition should be effective for sticking to them. This is a very basic use of technology, however provides a change in pace and activities. The equipment available and number of participants would need to be taken into account.

The aim of this program is for the participants to gain an understanding of cultural awareness and how this can relate to their workplace and everyday living. It also aims to provide them with skills and a basis for working in such conditions. As a result, this course is using the theories of Bandura (1977) by focusing on social learning. The learning will not just occur in the course on the day, but will be continued, hopefully throughout the participant’s future. Learning is also gained by experience which is what Bandura also focuses on. For these reasons I have suggested that, as well as a conclusion for the course, a wiki be developed in order for discussions and reflections. Here all participants can keep in contact and can learn from each others experiences.

As the follow up on any course is very important, evaluation surveys should be included on a website or info net, perhaps even the wiki. A first evaluation could be done on the day of the course, however to gain the full benefit of doing an evaluation, there should also be one conducted further down the line, when the participants have had the chance to use and reflect on their new knowledge/ skills.

I have also suggested the use of podcasting the course on the wiki so participants can refer back to it if needed. This may have to be protected with a password or user ID to ensure privacy.

The above story board sets out the course as it is outlined by DoCS. I have retained the structure and added in a few basic technologies and what I believe to be the main activities that contribute to the success of the course (and relate to learning theories). The sessions, ie main headings, are in the green boxes that run through the middle. The pink boxes are the main activities in the sessions, also including the technologies I am suggesting be implemented. Finally, the yellow boxes are my suggestions on what is to be done after the course on behalf of the participants in order to continue their learning.
