Characteristics of E-learners
I found a good e-learning book im going to use for another subject in the library. Its called ‘Preparing Learners for E-learning.’
It talks about the factors that influence learners to begin using e-learning and how these factors are best used in order for teachers to get the most out of their learners. It also gives suggestions for supporting e-learners whilst taking part in e-learning.
One part of the book i found particularly interesting was Table 7.1 “The Characteristics of Adopters” (p 117). Here it describes the five different types of people who adopt the new technology at different times.
Innovators (2.5%)
Early Adopters (13.5%)
Early Majority (34%)
Late Majority (34%)
Laggards (16%)
These characteristics and recognising them in students is important to the educator as different types of people need different support systems. For example Innovators will need an environment where they are able to explore and create new ideas, where as the Laggards will need an environment with plenty of explanations and step by step instructions.
I feel I would fit into the characteristic of the ‘Late Majority’ I am willing to let others try out new technologies first before I step in and have a go. In the table it says “Peer pressure motivates adoption” and I believe this is evident with the latest craze of facebook. I joined it about a month ago, however i still know a few people who have not been introduced to this technology.
