I found a good e-learning book im going to use for another subject in the library. Its called ‘Preparing Learners for E-learning.’
It talks about the factors that influence learners to begin using e-learning and how these factors are best used in order for teachers to get the most out of their learners. It also gives suggestions for supporting e-learners whilst taking part in e-learning.
One part of the book i found particularly interesting was Table 7.1 “The Characteristics of Adopters” (p 117). Here it describes the five different types of people who adopt the new technology at different times.
Innovators (2.5%)
Early Adopters (13.5%)
Early Majority (34%)
Late Majority (34%)
Laggards (16%)
These characteristics and recognising them in students is important to the educator as different types of people need different support systems. For example Innovators will need an environment where they are able to explore and create new ideas, where as the Laggards will need an environment with plenty of explanations and step by step instructions.
I feel I would fit into the characteristic of the ‘Late Majority’ I am willing to let others try out new technologies first before I step in and have a go. In the table it says “Peer pressure motivates adoption” and I believe this is evident with the latest craze of facebook. I joined it about a month ago, however i still know a few people who have not been introduced to this technology.

My posts have to be more indepth and evaluative. Will do something about that soon.
Looked at website: http://raisingchildren.net.au/dealing_with_separation/separation.html
It was a humanistic website. community based. varied reviews from class eg possibly patronising.. victoria said in the community sometimes things have to be aimed at a yr 8 level. would be different if it was aimed towards a group of CEOs.
Today we will be setting up a netvibes account and weblogs.
set up netvibes. www.netvibes.com
sign in is email mandapanda258@hotmail.com password is same as UTS email and delicious account.
had trouble adding feeds.. frustrating.
Doing something with digital dialogues. website came from subject documents, technology frameworks then weblogs set up then url. We should read info to understand weblogs.
Set up our blogs today did a few posts.
Had a bit of trouble finding the RSS feeds to place various websites onto my netvibes. Only did one tonight (the delicious account which woked) and ive forgotten how to put things onto the delicious account. I have 9 items saved on there at the moment, however only 3 under ‘elexp’.
It is really hard to get a layout that I like. This is what I would like in my layout.
- Easy to read
- Attractive
- Calendar showing days of posts
- Date of posts
- Personalised Title
This one ive now chosen, called ‘Redoable’ (after changing it about at million times), has most of those qualities except a personalised title. I also would have liked it a bit more colourful, although I suppose it will change again later.
Why do you need an e-learning glossary?
Because all this technology is new to me, glossaries will be a point of reference for the future and any terms that i dont know of.
Where do you start searching?
In class we started by searching through the search engine ‘google.’
How do you judge their relevance and credibility?
We checked the credibility by looking at the websites homepage. A good one was: http://www.e-learningguru.com/gloss.htm I saved more into my Delicious account.
New terms I have learnt:
I learned that USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. Interesting..
www.froguts.com/flash_content/index.html
We looked at this website, which has been deveoped to aid science students and to attempt to replace the dissecting of animals in educational institutions. We all thought these did not have the same effect as doing it in real life.
Looked at a variety of e-learning glossaries through google.
Also played google quiz as a class, had to pick a word that all the pictures represented.
set up our delicious account.

user name, Anewton, password same as uts online.
ELEXP anything related to elearning.
HW- questions from page 5 of activity guide. post answers on weblog when set up.
In week one we were given an introduction to the subject and to the terminology used around e-learning. At week ones class I noted that my definition of e-learning was:
“Using computers, internet or other communiation program as a way of learning. Increasingly used by businesses for training and development. Can be used within groups or alone and with or without a facilitator. Benefits include constant access worldwide and easy communication.”
ok i think i just worked it out. on the dashboard (which is like a homepage) you can click on ‘posts’ on the right hand side and it comes up so you can edit it. I have also changed the background by giving it a theme.
We have various things due next week.. I think they are basically showing that we have set up our different sites. I will have to check it on UTS online.
Id like to know how to edit previous blogs.. ie the one I just made.
